Kokunun Zaman Algısı Üzerine Etkisine Dair Deneysel Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı, güzel kokuların zaman algısı üzerindeki etkisini incelemektir. Literatür, görece güzel kokuların psikolojik iyi oluşu artırarak zaman algısını etkileyebileceğini ortaya koymaktadır. Ayrıca, koku algısının cinsiyetler arasında farklılık gösterebileceği ve bu farklılığın zaman algısını etkileyebileceği düşünülmektedir. Deneysel yöntemle gerçekleştirilen bu araştırma, çeşitli örnekleme yöntemleri aracılığı ile katılımcıları güzel kokulu ve nötr kokulu ortamlara ayırmıştır. Çalışma, zaman algısının psikolojik iyi oluş ve uyku kalitesi gibi kovaryantlar kontrol edilerek ölçülmesini amaçlamıştır. Bu nedenle verileri analiz etmek için başlangıçta ANCOVA ve cinsiyetler arası farklılaşmayı gözlemlemek için bağımsız gruplar için t-testi kullanılması planlanmıştır. Ancak, testler çeşitli varsayımları sağlanmadığı için analizler Mann Whitney U testi ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, güzel kokunun zaman algısı üzerinde anlamlı bir etki yaratmadığını göstermektedir. Ayrıca, koku etkisinin cinsiyete göre farklılaşmadığı saptanmıştır. Kullanılan koku türü, deneysel koşullar ve bireysel farklılıklar gibi faktörler nedeniyle ortaya çıkan ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmayan bu sonuç, duyusal girdiler ve bilişsel süreçler arasındaki ilişkinin beklenenden daha karmaşık olduğunu ortaya koymuş ve gelecekteki araştırmalar için yeni bir yol haritası çizmektedir.

An Experimental Investigation on the Effect of Odour on Time Perception

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of pleasant odors on perception of time. The literature suggests that pleasant odors may enhance psychological well-being and, in turn, affect perception of time. Additionally, it is hypothesized that the perception of odors may differ between genders, which could also influence perception of time. Conducted using an experimental method, this research assigned participants to pleasant-scented and neutral-scented environments through various sampling methods. The study aimed to measure time perception while controlling for covariates such as psychological well-being and sleep quality. Therefore, it was initially planned that ANCOVA be used for data analysis and an independent samples t-test to observe gender differences. However, since the various assumptions of the tests were not met, analyses were conducted using the Mann-Whitney U test. The findings revealed that pleasant odors did not have a statistically significant effect on perception of time. Additionally, it was found that the effect of odor did not differ by gender. This statistically non-significant result, stemming from factors such as the type of odor used, experimental conditions, and individual differences, suggests that the relationship between sensory inputs and cognitive processes are more complex than expected,and it paves a new way for future research.
