Cecily O’Neill's Process Drama: Teacher and Functions

Abstract

This study aims to examine the ‘process drama’ approach, which has an important place in the works of Cecily O'Neill, one of the drama theorists, and has brought it to a unique point with her practices over the years, and to discuss the place of the teacher/instructor/leader in this approach. The emergence of process drama, Cecily O'Neill's original approach, the teacher's place in this approach, where he/she positions himself in the classroom, the functions he/she should have, and also the evaluation of one of O'Neill's drama practices, ‘The Recruiting Officer’ based on these functions, constitute the general scope of the study. The study was prepared by using the screening model, one of the qualitative research methods. Document review and analysis of the theorist's own works and scientific studies about her, which constitutes the subject of the research, were made. As a result of the research, it can be said that process drama is a technique that can be achieved efficient results if used properly by competent teachers. According to O'Neill, competent teacher is the person who is active in every sense both inside and outside of the work. He/She is also an effective guide that takes roles when necessary, serves as a model for students, provides infrastructure for in-depth study, provides resources and supports them when needed, and challenges them to make strong questions when necessary.

Cecily O’Neill’in Süreçsel Draması: Öğretmen ve Fonksiyonları

Abstract

Bu çalışma, drama kuramcılarından Cecily O’Neill’in çalışmalarında önemli bir yer tutan ve uygulamalarıyla yıllar içerisinde kendisine has bir noktaya taşıdığı ‘süreçsel drama’ yaklaşımını incelemeyi ve bu yaklaşımda öğretmenin/eğitmenin/liderin yerini ele almayı amaçlamaktadır. Süreçsel dramanın ortaya çıkışı, Cecily O’Neill’in özgün yaklaşımı, bu yaklaşımda öğretmenin yeri, sınıfta kendisini konumlandırdığı yer, sahip olması gereken fonksiyonlar ve ayrıca bu fonksiyonlar baz alınarak, O’Neill’in drama uygulama örneklerinden biri olan ‘Askere Alım Memuru’ üzerine yapılan değerlendirme çalışmanın genel kapsamını oluşturmaktadır. Çalışma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden tarama modeli kullanılarak hazırlanmış olup konuyu oluşturan kuramcının kendi eserlerine ve hakkında yapılmış bilimsel çalışmalara dair doküman incelemesi ve analizi yapılmıştır. Araştırma neticesinde süreçsel dramanın yetkin öğretmenler tarafından doğru şekilde kullanıldığı takdirde verimli sonuçlar elde edilebilecek bir teknik olduğu söylenebilir. O’Neill’e göre yetkin öğretmen; çalışmanın hem içinde hem de dışında her anlamda aktif olan kişidir. Ayrıca gerektiğinde rol alan, öğrencilerine model olan, derinlikli bir çalışma için altyapı sağlayan, kaynaklar sunup ihtiyaç anında onları destekleyen ve yeri geldiğinde de meydan okuyup güçlü sorgulamalar yapmaya iten etkili bir rehberdir.
