Congress Of Moral Education and Its Reflection In Press
Abstract
This study aimed to deal with the Congress of Moral Education, which was held in Ankara
between 23-29 April 1951 under the leadership of the National Association of Teachers’
Associations of Turkey. Moreover, study also investigated purpose, organizers, conclusions,
the topics addressed in the Congress and the reflections of the congress in the press. Historical
research method was used in the study. Data included the news and letters that were collected
from the newspapers (Cumhuriyet, Ulus, Vatan, Zafer, Akşam, Yeni Sabah, Son Posta, Vakit,
Milliyet) published between April 23 and April 29, 1951 and from the ones that were issued 30
days before and after the congress. In addition, the brochure containing the reports prepared
by the Congress Science Committee has been examined. Data analysis conducted through
descriptive analysis and document analysis techniques. According to the results of the research,
the most news topics related to the Congress were the opening of the Congress, procedural discussions, coeducation, faculty of theology and religion education, university autonomy, and
the items related to the clothes of the girls worn during the May 19 The Commemoration of
Atatürk Youth and Sports Day. It was also found that there was intense debate in the Congress
and the discussions continued after the congress was over.
