Pre-Service Music Teachers’ Metaphors for The Concept of Teacher
Abstract
This study aimed to determine pre-service music teachers’ perception of the concept of
teacher by means of metaphors. The study sample included 130 pre-service music teachers in
the Music Teaching Program of the Fine Arts Teaching Department at Balıkesir University’s
Necatibey Education Faculty. The study data were collected by having the participants
complete the sentences. “A teacher is like a... because....” or “A teacher resembles to a...
because...” This is a qualitative study. The data were collected using a questionnaire created
by the researcher with open-ended questions. The data were examined using content analysis
method before being interpreted. The pre-service music teacher produced 31 metaphors. These
metaphors were classified into five theoretical categories by shared characteristics. The study
results revealed that the concept of teacher was explained using different metaphors by the
pre-service teachers.
