Prospective Science Teachers’ Attitude Toward The Environmental Problems and Their Metaphorical Perceptions About “Environmental Pollution”

The aim of this study is to find out prospective science teachers’ attitudes towards environmental problems and their metaphorical perception of “environmental pollution”. The research was performed in 2013-2014 fall semester at Gaziosmanpasa University in Tokat. The study group of this research was (n=132) prospective science teachers. The data collection tools were the “Environmental Attitude Scale” (Yoldas, 2009) and metaphor collection form. The survey method, which is one of the quantitative research methods and the phenomenographic design, which is one of the qualitative research methods, were used in this study. The quantitative data of this research were analysed descriptive analysis and One-Way ANOVA methods and the qualitative data was analysed content analysis. The result of this research showed that prospective science teachers became familiar with environmental problems but their environmental attitude scores were intermediate level. Also their environmental attitude was significant difference according to their gender, but their environmental attitude wasn’t significant differences according to their age, the type of high school that they graduated from, the type of place of residence, parents’ education level, parents’ occupation, families economic status and whether their membership in the environmental association. A total of 103 metaphors were produced for the concept of “environmental pollution” by the participant and these metaphors were divided into a total of eleven different categories. 

Bu çalışmanın amacı, fen bilimleri öğretmen adaylarının çevre sorunlarına yönelik tutumlarını ve çevre kirliliğine yönelik metaforik algılarını araştırmaktır. Araştırma 2013-2014 eğitim öğretim yarıyılı güz döneminde Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa Üniversitesinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın, çalışma grubunu fen bilimleri öğretmen adayları (n=132) oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada verileri toplamak amacıyla “Çevre Tutumları Ölçeği”(Yoldaş, 2009) ve metafor toplama formu kullanılmıştır. Bu araştırma da nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan tarama yöntemi ve nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden birisi olan olgubilim deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın nicel verileri betimsel analiz yöntemi ve tek yönlü ANOVA veri analiz yöntemleri kullanılarak, nitel verileri ise içerik analizi yöntemi kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, fen bilimleri öğretmen adaylarının çevre sorunlarına aşina oldukları fakat çevre tutum puanlarının orta seviyede olduğu görülmüştür. Çevre tutum düzeyinin ise cinsiyete göre anlamlı farklılık gösterirken, öğretmen adaylarının yaş, mezun oldukları lisenin türü, ikamet ettikleri yerin türü, anne-baba eğitim durumu, anne-baba mesleği, sosyoekonomik durum ve çevreyle ilgili derneğe üyeliğe göre anlamlı farklılık göstermediği belirlenmiştir. Çevre kirliliği kavramına yönelik metafor analizi sonucunda ise toplam 103 metafordan 11 farklı kategori oluşturulmuştur.
