The Relationship Between Student Engagement and Sense of Community in Online Learning Environments

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the students’ sense of community and engagement levels which have an impact on the learning process in online learning environments and to examine the relationships between these variables. The study sample consists 175 pedagogical formation program students at Karabuk University during 2014-2015 academic year. In order to obtain research data the Sense of Community Scale, Student Engagement Scale, and also a demographic information form has been used. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis H-Test, Mann Whitney U-Test, Spearman Rho Correlation Coefficient and descriptive statistics. The main finding shows that the students’ sense of community feeling were high. Also students’ sense of community did not differ significantly by the frequency of participation in online course. Students’ engagements were significantly different on the frequency of participation in online course. Students’ sense of community and engagements were in a positive correlation.
