Abstract

Abstract

Visible light communication (VLC) systems provide high-speed reliable data transmission simultaneously with the illumination function for indoor applications. In VLC systems, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are used at the transmitter and photo-diodes (PDs) are commonly used at the receiver. For lighting, LEDs must have good luminous efficacy and a good color rendering index (CRI). For communication, LEDs need to have a wide modulation bandwidth to support high data rates. Color shift keying (CSK) modulation using multicolor red-green-blue (RGB) LEDs with sufficient color rendering index to support high data rates was introduced in the IEEE 802.15.7 VLC standard. In VLC systems, quadrichoromatic LEDs (QLED) with a better color rendering index are also suitable for simultaneous illumination and communication. QLED offers not only an additional data channel, but also a better color quality in illumination. Therefore, QLED is the best choice in VLC Systems for both illumination quality and high data rates. In this study, symbol error rate (SER) analysis and analytical models are derived for AWGN channels in VLC systems with QLED. In the SER analysis, analytical models are derived by calculating the transition probabilities between symbols, which have a high impact on the total error. Euclidean distances between symbols were used in this analysis. The derived SER models are compatible with the union bound and simulation results.
