The Role of Emotional Intelligence in Conflict Management: A Research on Academicians

Öz

Nowadays, organizations confront conflict due to psychological, economic and personal reasons. Although the conflict in organizations is considered negative, it can sometimes be turned into an opportunity by people with high emotional intelligence. In fact, conflict can create a competitive advantage for organizations. Emotional intelligence competency is significant for organizational purposes in order to manage these conflicts and to direct them towards corporate goals. It is extremely significant to develop conflict management competencies for teams within the organization. The main aim of the research is to reveal the relationship between academicians' conflict management strategies and their emotional intelligence competencies. The emotional intelligence of the individual is considered to affect inter-individual conflict. The study aimed to reveal the relationship between the emotional intelligence competencies of academicians and their conflict management strategies and how their emotional intelligence competencies affect their conflict management strategies. Qualitative research method was used in the study. Six departments under the Commercial Sciences Faculty of a foundation university in Ankara were included in the study. These departments are (1) Tourism And Hotel Management, (2) Accounting And Financial Management, (3) Management Information Systems, (4) Banking, (5) Insurance And Risk Management, (6) International Trade. An interview was conducted with the academicians determined by the purposive sample and it was found that there is a close relationship between the emotional intelligence competencies of the academicians and their conflict management strategies. Accordingly,it was found that the emotional intelligence competencies and conflict management strategies had relation with persuasion, management skill, communication and decision making.

ÇATIŞMA YÖNETİMİNDE DUYGUSAL ZEKÂNIN ROLÜ: AKADEMİSYENLER ÜZERİNE BİR ARAŞTIRMA

Öz

Günümüzde örgütler psikolojik, ekonomik ve kişisel nedenlerden dolayı çatışma ile karşı karşıyadır. Örgütlerdeki çatışma olumsuz olarak görülse de, bazen duygusal zekâsı yüksek olan çalışanlar tarafından bir fırsata dönüştürülebilir. Aslında çatışma, örgütler için rekabet avantajı yaratabilir. Örgütsel amaçlar için çatışmaları yönetmek ve onları kurumsal hedeflere yönlendirmek için duygusal zekâ yeterlilikleri önemlidir. İşletmedeki ekipler için de çatışma yönetimi yeterliliklerinin geliştirilmesi son derece önemlidir. Bu kapsamda araştırmanın temel amacı akademisyenlerin çatışma yönetimi stratejileri ile duygusal zekâ yeterlilikleri arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymaktır. Bireyin duygusal zekâsının bireyler arası çatışmayı etkilediği düşünülmektedir. Bu nedenle çalışmada akademisyenlerin duygusal zekâ yeterlilikleri ile çatışma yönetimi stratejileri arasında nasıl bir ilişki olduğu ve duygusal yeterliliklerinin çatışma yönetimi stratejilerini nasıl etkilediği incelenmiştir. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmış ve Ankara’daki bir vakıf üniversitenin Ticari Bilimler Fakültesi altındaki altı bölüm dâhil edilmiştir. Bu bölümler (1) Turizm ve Otelcilik, (2) ) Muhasebe ve Finansal Yönetim, (3) Yönetim Bilişim Sistemleri, (4) Bankacılık, (5) Sigortacılık ve Risk Yönetimi, (6) Uluslararası Ticarettir. Amaçlı örneklem ile belirlenen akademisyenlere mülakat yapılmış ve elde edilen bulgular sonucunda akademisyenlerin duygusal yeterlilikleri ile çatışma yönetimi stratejileri arasında yakından bir ilişki olduğu görülmüş ve duygusal zekâ yeterlilikleri ile çatışma yönetimi stratejilerinden ikna etme, yönetme becerisi, iletişim ve karar verme ile ilişkisi olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.
