A Review on the Translation ‘The Last Invitation the Qur'an’ as a Reflection of Qur'anic Islam

Abstract

This article examined the translation named “The Last Invitation the Qur’ân" written by Prof. Dr. Gazi Özdemir. There are many problematic translations and interpretations in this translation. The examination was carried out within the framework of these problematic issues in translation. The article aims to present an example of the reflection of the understanding of "Qur’anic Islam (Qur’anism)" on the translations. Because it is seen that the translation was prepared on the basis of the understanding of “the Qur'anic Islam”. According to the understanding of the Qur'anic Islam, the Qur’an contains all the details about religion. Since it is a very comprehensible book, sciences such as tafsir, hadith and fiqh are not needed to understand it. However, the basic assumptions of this approach do not agree with the historical reality. In addition, the idea of understanding the Qur'ân without consulting another source is an approach that will open the door to endless subjectivity. Since this approach brings subjectivity, individuality and confusion in the understanding of religion, it further increases the conflicts among Muslims and harms their quality of being an “ummah (the muslim community)”. Its translation called “The Last Invitation the Qur’an” is a translation compatible with the characteristics of the understanding of the Qur’anic Islam. On the other hand negative examples of Qur’ân translations can erode the true Islamic belief in society to a certain extent. Therefore, it should be emphasized that writing translations is a matter of scientific and religious responsibility. The aim of the article is to create a social awareness on this responsibility. Since it is not possible to deal with all the problems in the translation within the framework of an article, twelve sample topics in work are included. The Author’s translation and comments of these issues are indicated, followed by a brief evaluation. These evaluations have been tried to be carried out within the framework of the basic sources of İslâm. At the end of the analysis, the following conclusions were reached: The main idea of the author of the translation is that religion should be understood only on the basis of the Qur’ân. As a result of this idea, he tries to interpret the Qur’ân only from the text. Another characteristic of the work is its negative attitude towards hadith and sunnah. By detaching the Qur’anic verses from their context, he argues that hadith is not a source in religion. He only accepts the hadiths that he thinks are in accordance with the Qur’ân. The translation claims that Allah's knowledge is limited, that some people will experience the Qiyamah (the Day of Judgement) on earth, that they will no longer need religion, and that some people will be sent back to the earth after death for education. The word "junub" is interpreted as confusion and stupor; “ghusl” is interpreted as waiting for recovery from confusion and stupor. Ablution is a recommended practice in order to to appear in public in a clean state. The concept of "salat" is given the meaning of "engaging in social cooperation and solidarity." It is argued that those praying alone do not need to face the qibla. The word fasting (sawm) is defined as "abstaining from eating and drinking and sensual desires as well as engaging in cheritable activities". It is argued that Ramadan can be fasted for three days and that Ramadan should be fixed in the winter. The Kaaba is regarded as a school building, the pilgrimage is an educational activity, and it is claimed that worship at the Kaaba came later. “Sacrifice” is defined as “sacrificing something on values in order to fulfill someone else’s need”. It is alleged that women are commanded to cover their breasts, not their hair. It is argued that Allah does not impose prohibitions on food and drink and drinking an amount that will not make you drunk is not haram. It is claimed that the expression "Lahmü'l-hınzîr" can be given the meaning of spoiled meat. The author of the translation tries to create an understanding of religion based only on the Qur’ân and bases his translationans and interpretations on the literal meaning of the Qur’ân. He does not take into account the reasons for the revelation of the verses, the Prophet Muhammad’s hadiths, does not respect the integrity of the Qur’ân. As a result of this approach, it tries to redefine the basic concepts of Islam that have been transmitted in Islam as trustworthy and to justify some non-Islamic beliefs with the Qur’ân. The translation of the Qur’ân is a study that aims to reveal what Allah intends in the Qur’ân. Therefore, in order to reveal the intention of the owner of the word correctly, the translation process must be subject to certain rules. Otherwise, the purpose of the translation will not be realized
