Turkey’s Internal Affairs in 1980s According to the British Documents
Abstract
This study examines Turkey’s internal political and economic developments during the transformative decade of the 1980s, a period marked by military intervention, constitutional reform, and economic liberalization. Following the 1980 coup, the National Security Council assumed legislative authority, restoring law and order while initiating structural reforms, including tax and higher education legislation. The 1982 Constitution institutionalized a controlled transition to civilian governance, culminating in the 1983 general elections and the rise of Turgut Özal’s Motherland Party. Despite progress toward democratization, restrictions on political activity, press freedom, and trade union rights persisted, drawing criticism from European institutions. Economically, Turkey pursued export-oriented growth under IMF and OECD guidance, implementing liberalization measures that reshaped trade and finance. However, persistent inflation, fiscal imbalances, and social tensions challenged stability. By decade’s conclude, Turkey faced mounting economic pressures, human rights concerns, and political fragmentation, underscoring the complexity of its modernization trajectory. This analysis situates the 1980s as a pivotal era that redefined Turkey’s political order and economic orientation, laying the groundwork for subsequent democratic and market reforms.
