KONYA HAMİDİYE INDUSTRY SCHOOL

Abstract

Konya Industry School was one of the schools opened with gaining importance of occupational education in Ottoman Empire after Tanzimat reform. Industry schools had a huge importance in Ottoman territories in terms of providing education and meeting military clothing necessities and other necessities in the area. The first industry school was founded in 1868 in Istanbul. This school was a demonstration of schools opened by Mithat Pasha when he was Danube governor. The Industry School in Konya was initially opened for purposes of meeting military needs in workshops during the war; however, it was converted into an industry place in 1901. Initially, there were only three

teachers and seventeen students in the school, teacher and student number increased over time. Moreover, the school providing day education started to provide night education as well, and both student number and quality increased over time. The school was founded with struggles and moral and material supports of the local community. Financial difficulties experienced time to time are tried to be solved by management studiously for enabling quality enhancement in education. Konya Hamidiye Industry School filled gaps in missing areas in education and local economy with art classes opened.
