THE EFFECT OF PERIOPERATIVE PERIOD FASTING PERIOD ON THE QUALITY OF HEALING OF PATIENTS HAVING LAPAROSCOPIC CHOLESYSTECTOMY SURGERY
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to examine the effect of fasting periods on the quality of recovery of patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was conducted using a descriptive and correlational design. 200 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy were included in the study. Data; It was collected with the data collection form prepared by the researchers and the Quality of Recovery 40 Survey. In the analysis of data; for descriptive statistics, p percentages, means, standard deviations, and minimum–maximum values were calculated. The Mann-Whitney U test, a nonparametric test, was used to compare two independent groups. Relationships between numerical variables were examined with the Pearson correlation coefficient.
RESULTS: In the research, it was found that the average fasting period in the perioperative period for patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy was 17.90 ± 2.61 hours. The mean score for quality of recovery was found to be 160.58 ± 19.40. Patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy were found to have above-average scores on the quality of recovery and subscales of patient support, freedom of movement, pain, emotional state, and physical comfort. It was concluded that as the fasting period is prolonged, both preoperatively and postoperatively, the quality of recovery, patient support, freedom of movement, pain, emotional state and physical comfort are negatively affected (p<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: Patients included in the study were found to experience prolonged fasting periods, which were associated with various complications. Extended fasting in both the preoperative and postoperative periods had significantly negative effects on recovery quality, patient support, freedom of movement, pain, emotional state, and physical comfort.
