Abstract

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the difficulties experienced by pediatric patients diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was conducted at the Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Hospital Child Health and Diseases Clinic between May 1, 2020 and July 1, 2020. 102 patients and their parent pairs, aged between 4 and 18, diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, were included in the study. All data were collected by an online survey method through the "Google Forms" platform. The SPSS 26 package program was used for statistical analysis and p<0.05 was considered significant.
RESULTS: Of the patients included in the study, 55 were female (53.9%) and 47 were male. The average age of the patients participating in the study was found to be 13.02 ±3.9 years. It was determined that during the pandemic period, 62 (60.8%) of the participating cases had an increase in their insulin treatment dose, 21 (20.6%) experienced a hyperglycemia attack, and 61 (59.8%) experienced a hypoglycemia attack. It was found that junk food consumption increased in 44 (43.1%) of the cases and the sleeping habits of 60 (58.8%) were affected.
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that parents of children diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus had sufficient knowledge about COVID-19 during the pandemic. During the pandemic, it was also determined that patients diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus had problems adapting to their diet, their sleep patterns changed and they needed professional health support to keep the disease under control.
