CINEMA MEETS COACHING: REFLECTION OF PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION IN THE FILM WHIPLASH (2014)

Abstract

This study examines the narrative possibilities that cinema offers for depicting transformation processes, integrating them with the perspective of personal transformation in coaching. Film serves as a powerful medium that conveys characters’ inner journeys, their strategies for coping with challenges, and their transformative experiences to the audience. Coaching, on the other hand, is defined as a process that guides individuals in discovering their potential, setting goals, and working toward achieving those goals. The shared ground between these two distinct fields reveals the dynamics of guidance and transformation from different perspectives. Focusing specifically on Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash (2014), this study explores how coaching principles and personal transformation stages—goal setting, developing awareness, taking action, and maintaining progress—are represented in cinematic narrative, using the method of visual text analysis. The study’s original contribution lies in its finding that the main character Andrew’s difficult and multilayered journey reveals personal transformation as dependent not only on external success, but also on internal leadership and the ability to take responsibility. In this context, Whiplash transcends the traditional teacher-student relationship and emerges as a cinematic representation of a transformative coaching practice. The film compellingly conveys that coaching is not only about motivation, but also about deepening, challenging, and confronting the individual with their inner reality.

SİNEMANIN KOÇLUKLA BULUŞMASI: KİŞİSEL DÖNÜŞÜMÜN WHIPLASH (2014) FİLMİNDEKİ YANSIMASI

Abstract

Bu çalışma, sinemanın dönüşüm süreçlerine sunduğu anlatı olanaklarını koçluk kişisel dönüşüm perspektifiyle birleştirerek ele almaktadır. Film, karakterlerin içsel yolculuklarını, zorluklarla başa çıkma stratejilerini ve dönüşüm süreçlerini izleyiciye aktaran güçlü bir araçtır. Koçluk ise bireylerin potansiyellerini keşfetmelerine, hedefler belirlemelerine ve bu hedeflere ulaşmalarına rehberlik eden bir süreç olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Her iki farklı alandaki ortak paydalar, rehberlik ve dönüşüm dinamiklerini farklı perspektiflerden sunmaktadır. Bu çalışma, Damien Chazelle imzalı Whiplash (2014) filmi özelinde koçluk prensiplerinin ve kişisel dönüşümün (hedef belirleme, farkındalık yaratma, aksiyon alma ve yolda kalma) sinematik anlatımda nasıl temsil edildiğini görsel metin çözümlemesi yöntemiyle ele alarak sunmaktadır. Çalışmanın özgün sonucu filmdeki ana karakter Andrew’in zorlu ve çok katmanlı yolculuğu üzerinden, kişisel dönüşümün yalnızca dışsal başarıya değil, içsel liderliğe ve sorumluluk alabilmeye de dayandığını ortaya koymaktadır. Böylelikle Whiplash, öğretmen-öğrenci ilişkisinin ötesine geçerek, dönüştürücü bir koçluk pratiğinin sinematik bir temsiline dönüşmektedir. Film, koçluğun yalnızca motive eden değil; derinleştiren, zorlayan ve kişiyi kendiyle yüzleştiren yönünü izleyiciye güçlü biçimde sunmaktadır.
