COGNITIVE MODELS OF PERSECUTORY DELUSIONS

Abstract

Delusions are among frequently encountered symptoms in psychiatric patients. However formal definition of delusions is inconclusive. The difficulty in distinguishing whether a thought is a delusion may partly be a consequence of the lack of operational criteria in commonly used diagnostic systems. This review article aims both to shed light on the cognitive explanations of delusions and thus provide benefit in recognition and comprehension of persecutory delusions in clinical practice. In addition cognitive perspective influence of culture on delusions is also discussed
