Abstract

Objective: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT) is a psychotherapy method which hasbeen used in adults for a long time and hasestablished efficacy in experimental studies.Application of CBT is more recent in childrenand adolescents. In this review our aim was tosummarize the literature of CBT applications in children and adolescents and to discuss CBT use in common psychopathologies. Method: We used pubmed search motor and child, adolescent, and cognitive behavioral therapy key words to search for the relevant literature in addition to textbooks on the subject. We emphasized the textbook knowledge in the introduction part and full-text controlled studies and review articles for the respective specific disorders. Results: The literature indicated that maladaptive cognitive shemas that underlie various adult psychiatric disorders begin in childhood. The need to adapt CBT techniques to the developmental level of the children and adolescent subjects is also emphasized. Conclusion: The data indicating that use of simplified, developmentally adapted and CBT in which the family also participates is effective in children and adolescents and that CBT will be increasigly included in the daily practice of child and adolescent psychiatrists are accumulating
