Psychiatric Status of Adolescent Cases Who Were Diagnosed As Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Childhood

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of the study is assessing the psychiatric morbidity of cases who were diagnosed Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during their childhood. Thirteen ADHD cases and 12 normal subjects were included in the study. Method: Mean age of ADHD group was 19.3 (+ 2.6) and of control group was 20.6 (± 2.7). SCID-I (Structured Clinical Intervievv for DSM-IV) was applied to ali subjects in both groups. Subjects were also assessed with Wender-Utah scale, Beck Depression Scale, and SCL-90. Results: Although SCL-90 and Beck Depression Scale findings and behavioral and academic histories of ADHD cases were not statistically different than the control group; ADHD cases had significantly more psychiatric diagnoses when assessed with SCID-I. Discussion: Results indicate that ADHD group received significantly more psychiatric diagnoses than control group in adolescence. These observations suggest that psychiatric assessment with structured intervievv is very important for the diagnosis of additional disorders. Using only scales for diagnosis is not a very reliable of evaluation of comorbid conditions.
