Social Representations

Abstract

İn this article, it is aimed to introduce the social representations theory of Serge Moscovici (1961) that emerged as an alternative and critical approach to the orthodox social psychology in terms of its contents of interest and methodolgy. Social Representations, by definition include common theories, opinions, and knovvlege which are fabricated around socities' own experiences. Contrary to the Social Cognition Theory where individuals' cognitive processes are mostly emphasised, Social Representational approach assumes that a commonly shared cognition exists, and accents that the main target of social psychology requires the study of common knovvlege and theories based on a society's long term memory vvhich captures its history, and the short term memory vvhich refers to the current events taking place in the society. İn this framevvork, although social representational approach finds place in social psychology, it suggests collective studies from different fields, such as linguistics, history, social psychology, social psychiatry, antropology, sociology and media studies. The study of knovvlege that is especially produced and changed during periods of crisis, is generally pursued through qualitative methods.
