The Turkish Version of the Bern Sex Role Inventory Abstract

Abstract

This study investigated some characteristics of the Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) adaptated into Turkish by Kavuncu (1987). VVith this purpose, 40 BSRI items (20 masculine and 20 feminine) were administered to 479 females and 510 males to determine factorial structure, item properties, validity and reliability of the BSRI. To determine the factorial structure of the BSRI for combined sexes, 20 masculine and 20 feminine items were subjected to principal compenent analysis by varimax rotation. İt was found that the three factors were interpretable. İt was cöncluded that the first factor was general, the second was femininity and the third was masculinity. Accordance to this results, this factorial structure is different from original BSRI. Results of the item analysis were satisfactory. Cronbach alpha coeficients were .73 for Feminity Scale and .75 for Masculinity Scale. İt was found that males scored significantly higher on masculinity than females, and females scored significantly higher on feminity than males, and also it was found that there are significant differences betvveen the ratios of feminine and masculine sex roles in males and females. To compute femininity and masculinity medians, the data from 1762 participants (859 females and 903 males) were examined, and it was found 111 (5.55) for femininity scores and 104 (5.20) for masculinity scores. The results were discussed in accordance with the literatüre.
