A Reading on Flexibility and Changeability in Interior Design of Small Houses
Abstract
Today, social, economic and technological developments directly affect people's living conditions and living spaces. Rapidly increasing population, transportation difficulties, especially in city centres, the increase in land prices, and the decrease in natural resources as a result of increased consumption force people to live in limited square metres. In small spaces, each area should be used efficiently, and he space should be adaptable to change according to user needs. In this context, it is important to include the concepts of flexibility and changeability into inimalist space designs. Flexibility and changeability are design approaches that enables the adaptation of a space according to the arrangements made in line with spatial planning. Incorporating flexibility and changeability into the design process enables user-centred designs. In addition, flexibility and changeability make it possible for interior design to adapt to the changing needs of different users. In this study, it is aimed to analyse small spaces on the concepts of flexibility and changeability. A qualitative research technique was used in the method of the study Within the scope of the study, three sample dwellings were selected from the Never Too Small programme, which focuses on the design of small living spaces, according to specific constraints. The selected dwellings were examined in detail in terms of mobility, combinability, divisibility and multi-purpose use criteria within the context of flexibility of use criteria. In line with the findings obtained in the conclusion part of the study, it was concluded that the concepts of flexibility and changeability in small dwellings provide space saving, function change and multiple use of the space with more than one function.
