Determination of Financial Literacy Level: During Undergraduate Education

Abstract

In recent years, the role of governments and employers in managing investments on behalf of individuals has
begun to decline. As a result of the changing structure, the responsibilities of individuals to manage their own
income and to secure their financial future are increasing.With increasing responsibility, individuals have had to
be more careful and selective. The fact that most individuals, especially young people, do not have enough
information about personal finance issues such as budgeting, investment, credit and spending, has caused them to
make wrong financial decisions.
This study was carried out in order to determine how the financial literacy status of university students changes
throughout their university life. As a result of the study, it has been determined that there is an increase in the
financial literacy levels of the students from the 1st to the 4th grade, from low and very low levels to medium and
high levels. In general, it was determined that the students were moderately financially literate at all grade levels
except the 3rd grade (high). It has been determined that the average of correct answers given by the students to the
questions in the sub-level titles of financial literacy increases as the class progresses, in almost every grade and
every sub-level.

Finansal Okuryazarlık Seviyesi Tespiti: Lisans Eğitimi Süresince

Abstract

Son yıllarda, hükümetlerin ve işverenlerin bireyler namına yatırımları yönetmedeki rolleri azalmaya başlamıştır.
Değişen yapı sonucunda bireylerin kendi gelirlerini yönetme ve finansal geleceklerini garantiye alma konusundaki
sorumlulukları giderek artmaktadır. Artan sorumluluk ile beraber, bireyler daha dikkatli ve seçici olmak
durumunda kalmışlardır. Özellikle genç olan çoğu bireyin bütçeleme, yatırım, kredi ve harcama gibi kişisel finans
konuları hakkında yeterince bilgiye sahip olmaması yanlış finansal kararlar almalarına sebebiyet vermektedir.
Bu çalışma, üniversite öğrencilerinin finansal okuryazarlık durumlarının üniversite hayatları boyunca nasıl
değişiklik gösterdiğini tespit edebilmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda öğrencilerin finansal
okuryazarlık seviyelerinde, 1. sınıftan 4. sınıfa kadar bakıldığında düşük ve çok düşük düzeyden, orta ve yüksek
düzeye doğru bir artış olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Genel olarak öğrencilerin, 3. sınıf hariç (yüksek) tüm sınıf
düzeylerinde orta düzeyde finansal okuryazar oldukları belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin finansal okuryazarlık alt düzey
başlıklarında yer alan sorulara vermiş oldukları doğru cevap ortalamalarının, sınıf ilerledikçe neredeyse her sınıfta
ve her alt düzeyde arttığı belirlenmiştir.
