The Use of Real-Life Contexts in 6th Grade Middle School Mathematics Textbooks: An Example from the Integers Unit

Abstract

This study aims to examine how real-life contexts are utilized in middle school mathematics textbooks regarding the topic of integers, which is introduced for the first time in the middle school mathematics curriculum. The data for the research consist of the integer units found in a total of four mathematics textbooks recommended by the Ministry of National Education for the academic years 2021-2022 and 2022-2023. Document analysis was employed to analyze the research data. The findings of the study reveal that the most frequently encountered real-life contexts presented to readers in the examined four books are related to temperature and money, while the least frequent ones are the free context and timeline. Although the use of real-life contexts in the introducing integers varies widely, this diversity decreases in the treatment of learning objectives related to comparing and ordering integers and absolute value. Some books only facilitate the understanding of temperature contexts in all learning objectives, while some of them include real-life contexts in only certain learning objectives. Additionally, it is identified that the placement of contexts in the flow of the topics in textbooks (introduction, concept development, concept evaluation, and end-of-unit evaluation) differs. These approach variations among the textbooks suggest that students exposed to education through these textbooks may have the potential to be more competent in certain real life contexts and less flexible in thinking styles in other contexts.

Ortaokul 6. Sınıf Matematik Ders Kitaplarında Gerçek Yaşam Bağlamlarının Kullanımı: Tamsayılar Konusu Örneği

Abstract

Bu çalışma, ortaokul matematik müfredatında ilk kez ele alınan tamsayılar konusunun ortaokul matematik ders kitaplarında gerçek yaşam bağlamları yönüyle nasıl kullanıldığını incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmanın verilerini Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı’nın 2021-2022 ve 2022-2023 eğitim öğretim yılı için önerdiği toplam dört matematik ders kitabında yer alan tamsayılar ünitesi oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma verilerinin analizinde doküman analizi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın bulguları, incelenen dört kitap içerisinde okuyucuların karşısına en sık çıkan gerçek yaşam bağlamlarının sıcaklık ve para bağlamı, en az sıklıkta çıkan gerçek yaşam bağlamlarının serbest bağlam ve zaman çizelgesi olduğunu ortaya çıkarmıştır. Tam sayıların tanıtılması ile ilgili kazanımda gerçek hayat bağlamı kullanımları oldukça çeşitlense de tam sayıların karşılaştırılması ve sıralanması ile mutlak değerle ilgili kazanımların işlenişinde bu çeşitlilik azalmaktadır. Bazı kitaplar sadece sıcaklık bağlamının tüm kazanımlarda anlamlandırılmasını sağlamış, bazı kitaplar ise gerçek yaşam bağlamlarından bazılarına sadece belirli kazanımlarda yer vermiştir. Buna ek olarak, ders kitaplarındaki bağlamların konu akışındaki yerlerine göre (giriş, kavram geliştirme, kazanımı değerlendirme ve ünite sonu değerlendirme) farklılık gösterdiği tespit edilmiştir. Kitaplar arasındaki bu yaklaşım farklılıkları, incelenen ders kitapları yoluyla öğretime tabi olan öğrencilerin bazı bağlamlarda daha yetkin olma, bazı bağlamlarda daha az esnek düşünme tarzlarına sahip olma potansiyeli taşıdığını ortaya çıkarmıştır. Çalışmanın bulguları, ilgili alan yazını ışığında tartışılmıştır.
