Biopolitical, Sociopsychological, and Gender Dimensions of Reproduction in Türkiye: A Theoretical Framework for Conceptualizing the Reproductive Psychology

Abstract

This study considers human reproduction to be a multi-layered experience, intertwined with psychological, cultural, gender, and political dynamics, rather than merely a biological process. In Turkey, modernisation policies, patriarchal structures, religious norms, medicalisation processes and class inequalities have shaped the reproductive sphere and related experiences, leading to the neglect of the subjective, emotional, psychological and relational dimensions of reproduction. Although multifaceted and relational approaches to reproductive processes have emerged in international literature, this field has yet to be examined holistically in Turkey, with approaches often remaining within a normative and biologically reductionist framework. Against this backdrop, the present study examines the historical and cultural dynamics that render reproductive experiences invisible in Turkey. It argues that Western-centric models and disciplinary approaches are inadequate for explaining the local context of reproduction and advocates a culturally sensitive, intersectional and interdisciplinary rethinking of women's reproductive processes. In this context, the study proposes a new analytical approach to conceptualising the multidimensional experiences related to reproduction in Turkey. In this way, it offers a framework capable of explaining reproductive processes, infertility experiences, the transition to parenthood, the effects of assisted reproductive technologies, and the emotional and social reflections of gender norms on reproduction, alongside a scientifically and culturally grounded psychological intervention practice. It will also contribute to the development of practices and models that empower women.

Türkiye’de Üreme’nin Biyopolitik, Sosyopsikolojik ve Toplumsal Cinsiyet Boyutları: Reprodüktif Psikolojinin Kavramsallaştırılmasına Yönelik Kuramsal Bir Çerçeve

Abstract

Bu çalışma, insan üremesinin yalnızca biyolojik bir süreç olarak değil, aynı zamanda psikolojik, kültürel, toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri ve politik dinamiklerle iç içe geçmiş çok katmanlı bir deneyim olarak ele almaktadır. Türkiye’de reprodüktif alan ve ona ilişkin deneyimler modernleşme politikaları, ataerkil yapı, dini normlar, tıbbileşme süreçleri ve sınıfsal eşitsizlikler tarafından şekillendirilerek, üremenin öznel, duygusal, psikolojik ve ilişkisel boyutları göz ardı edilmiştir. Uluslararası literatürde üreme süreçlerine ilişkin çok yönlü ve ilişkisel yaklaşımlar gelişirken, Türkiye’de bu alanın henüz bütüncül bir perspektiften ele alınmadığı, yaklaşımın çoğu zaman normatif ve biyolojik indirgemeci bir çerçevede kaldığı görülmektedir. Bu bağlamda bu çalışma, Türkiye’de üreme deneyimlerini görünmez kılan tarihsel ve kültürel dinamikleri analiz ederek uluslararası modellerin ve disipliner yaklaşımların üremenin yerel bağlamını açıklamakta yetersiz kaldığını tartışmakta ve kadının üreme süreçlerinin toplumsal cinsiyete duyarlı, kesişimsel ve disiplinlerarası bir çerçevede yeniden düşünülmesi gerektiğini savunmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda çalışma, Türkiye’de üremeye ilişkin çok boyutlu deneyimleri kavramsallaştırabilecek yeni bir bütüncül ilişkisel yaklaşım önermekte ve bu yaklaşım içinde reprodüktif psikolojiyi diğer alanları kesişimsel bir şekilde tamamlayıcı bir çerçeve olarak konumlandırmaktadır. Böylelikle üreme süreçlerini, infertilite deneyimlerini, ebeveynliğe geçişi, yardımcı üreme teknolojilerinin etkilerini ve toplumsal cinsiyet normlarının üreme üzerindeki duygusal ve toplumsal yansımalarını, yanısıra bilimsel ve kültürel temelli bir psikolojik müdahale pratiğini bir arada açıklayabilecek bir çerçeve sunmaktadır. Aynı zamanda çalışma kadınların güçlenmesini sağlayacak uygulama ve modellerin gelişmesine de katkı sunacaktır.
