Abstract

Although studies for women in terms of gender roles exist in literature, it has been observed that especially in our country very few studies were done on the “tomboy” concept. Besides their cis-gender characteristics, individuals exhibit feminine and masculine attitudes and behaviours contrary to their gender roles attributed to them, and these manners of gender expression can be seen among children. Although the concept exists in many countries, studies have suggested that in the historical process there were changes in the meanings and the scope of the word, which is based upon culture, language properties and societies’ attitudes towards tomboy individuals. -Turkish equivalent of tomboy as “erkek fatma” is used for the girls who get dressed and behave like boys, and generally represents a limited period of time until adolescence. With this compilation study, tomboy concept has been focused on, Turkish and foreign literatures have been reviewed and it has been analysed in various topics. Particularly, the feminist literature has been analysed, and women studies and the tomboyism in Turkish society have been evaluated; tomboy concept’s reflections on such fields as art, literature and fashion have been studied.

Abstract

Toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri açısından kadınlara yönelik çalışmalar literatürde yer alsa da özellikle ülkemizde tomboy kavramı üzerine çok sınırlı sayıda çalışmanın yapıldığı gözlemlenmiştir. Doğuştan gelen cinsiyet özelliklerinin yanı sıra bireyler kendilerinden beklenen toplumsal cinsiyet rollerinin aksine feminen ya da maskülen tutum ve davranışlar gösterebilmekte, bu türden cinsiyet ifade tarzları çocuklarda da görülebilmektedir. Bunlardan biri olan ‘tomboy’ birçok ülkede kendine yer bulmuş olsa da yapılan çalışmalar toplumların tomboy bireylere yaklaşımına, kültüre ve dilin özelliklerine bağlı olarak kelimenin anlamında ve kapsamında tarihsel süreç içerisinde değişiklikler olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Türkçeye ise ‘erkek fatma’ olarak giren kavram erkek çocukları gibi giyinen, onlar gibi davranan kız çocuklarına yönelik olarak kullanılmakta ve genellikle ergenliğe kadarki kısıtlı bir dönemi temsil etmektedir. Bu derleme çalışmasıyla birlikte tomboy kavramı merkeze alınmış olup Türkçe ve yabancı literatür taranarak çeşitli başlıklar halinde gözden geçirilmiştir. Özellikle feminist literatür incelenerek kadın çalışmaları ile Türk toplumunda tomboyluğun ele alınışı değerlendirilmiş; sanat, edebiyat, moda gibi çeşitli alanlara tomboy kavramının yansımaları araştırılmıştır.
