Analysis of AFP, CEA, CA19-9, CA125 and PSA levels of in-patient at General Surgery Clinic

Abstract

Objective: To compare tumor marker levels of in-patients at General Surgery Clinic with cancer and benign conditions. Methods: In this study, we investigated the relations between age, gender, diagnosis and tumor marker levels of 71 patients who have been operated at general surgery clinic of Adana Numune Education and Research Hospital, of whom 48 were cancer. Results: Concordant with literature, CA125 levels were significantly higher for women when compared to men (p<0.05). There was a weak correlation between age and CA19-9 levels. There were strong correlations between CA19-9 – AFP, CA19-9 – CEA and CEA – AFP. Breast, colorectal, gastric cancer and control group were compared for AFP, CEA, CA125, CA15-3, CA19-9 and PSA levels and no significant correlation was found (p>0.05). We combined the colorectal, gastric and breast cancer cases under the name of “malign group” and compared them with the control group; p values for CA125 and CA19-9 were less 0.05. Thus, we concluded that CA19-9 and CA125 levels are useful to differentiate a cancer patient from a patient with a benign disease. For best benign-malign discrimination in our material, cut-off values was 31 U/mL for CA19-9 and 35 U/mL for CA125. Conclusion: We concluded that tumor markers CA19-9 and CA125 are useful for cancer diagnosis

Genel Cerrahi Kliniğinde Yatan Hastalarda AFP, CEA, CA19-9, CA125 ve PSA Düzeylerinin Analizi

Abstract

Amaç: Genel Cerrahi kliniğinde yatan kanser hastaları ve benign hastalığı olanlar arasında tümör belirteç düzeylerini karşılaştırmak Yöntem: Bu çalışmada Adana Numune Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Genel Cerrahi Kliniğinde opere edilen 71 hastanın yaş, cinsiyet, tanı ve tümör belirteç düzeyleri ile arasındaki ilişki incelendi. Bulgular: Tüm kadın olgularda CA125 düzeyinin literatüre uygun olarak erkeklere kıyasla anlamlı derecede yüksek (p<0,05) olduğu, CA19-9 ile yaş arasında pozitif ve zayıf bir korelasyon olduğu, CA19-9, CEA ve AFP arasında ise güçlü pozitif korelasyon olduğu saptandı. Meme, kolorektal ve mide kanseri olgularında ve kontrol grubu arasında yapılan ikili karşılaştırmalarda AFP, CEA, CA125, CA15-3, CA19-9 ve PSA düzeyleri açısından fark bulunmadı (p>0,05). Kolorektal, mide ve meme kanserli olgular malign başlığı altında birleştirilerek kontrol grubuyla kıyaslandı; CA125 ve CA19-9 için p değerleri 0.05’ten küçük bulundu. Böylece, bir hastada malignite olup olmadığının ayrımında CA19-9 ve CA125 düzeylerinin ölçümünün anlamlı olduğu sonucuna varıldı. CA199 için, olgularımızda en uygun eşik değer 31 U/mL, CA125 için ise 35 U/mL olarak tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç: Tümör belirteçleri CA19-9 ve CA125, kanser tanısında yararlı bulunmuşlardır
