The Representation of Family Relationships in Television Series in the Context of Zygmunt Bauman’s Theory of Liquid Modernity

Abstract

In traditional societies, family, marriage, and parenthood are among the most fundamental institutions of the social order. However, with the modernization process, these institutions have lost their continuity and become more fragile and fluid. Zygmunt Bauman's theory of liquid modernity emphasizes that in contemporary societies, relationships and institutions are moving away from permanence and are shaped by flexibility and transience. In this context, media, especially television series, is one of the most important representational platforms that make visible the transformation of the family institution. The purpose of this study is to examine how the institution of family is represented in the media within the framework of Zygmunt Bauman's concept of liquid modernity. By analyzing how fundamental family-related concepts such as marriage, divorce, and parenthood are portrayed in television series, the transformation of the family structure in contemporary society is demonstrated through theoretical and visual examples. This study examines media representations of family from a sociological perspective, thus making the process of social change visible. The analysis conducted through Bauman's concept of liquid modernity is crucial for revealing how the institution of family is currently transforming. It also contributes theoretically to the study by emphasizing that media content reflects social structure and also accelerates social change. In this respect, the study aims to contribute to both media sociology and family sociology literature. In this context, we specifically examine high-rated television series and box office successes. The selection of popular content more clearly demonstrates the media's power to shape social perceptions and values.

TV DİZİLERİNDE AİLE İLİŞKİLERİNİN ZYGMUNT BAUMAN’IN AKIŞKAN MODERNİTE TEORİSİ BAĞLAMINDATEMSİLİ

Abstract

Geleneksel toplumlarda aile, evlilik ve ebeveynlik toplumsal düzenin en temel kurumları arasında yer almaktadır. Ancak modernleşme süreciyle birlikte bu kurumlar, sürekliliğini yitirerek daha kırılgan ve değişken bir yapıya bürünmüştür. Zygmunt Bauman’ın akışkan modernite kuramı, günümüz toplumlarında ilişkilerin ve kurumların kalıcılıktan uzaklaşıp esneklik ve geçicilik üzerinden şekillendiğini vurgular. Bu bağlamda medya, özellikle diziler, aile kurumunun dönüşümünü görünür kılan en önemli temsil alanlarından biridir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Zygmunt Bauman’ın akışkan modernite kavramı çerçevesinde medyada aile kurumunun nasıl temsil edildiğini incelemektir. Özellikle evlilik, boşanma, ebeveynlik gibi aileye ilişkin temel kavramların dizilerde nasıl yansıtıldığı analiz edilerek, günümüz toplumunda aile yapısının dönüşümü kuramsal ve görsel örneklerle ortaya konulmuştur. Bu çalışma, medyada aile temsillerini sosyolojik bir perspektifle ele alarak toplumsal değişim sürecini görünür kılmaktadır. Bauman’ın akışkan modernite kavramı üzerinden yapılan analiz, aile kurumunun günümüzde nasıl dönüşmekte olduğunu ortaya koymak açısından önem taşımaktadır. Ayrıca, medya içeriklerinin yalnızca toplumsal yapıyı yansıtmadığı, aynı zamanda toplumsal değişimi hızlandıran bir unsur olduğunu vurgulaması bakımından çalışmaya kuramsal katkı sağlamaktadır. Bu yönüyle araştırma hem medya sosyolojisi hem de aile sosyolojisi literatürüne katkıda bulunmayı hedeflemektedir. Bu bağlamda, özellikle yüksek izlenme oranlarına sahip diziler ve gişe başarısı elde etmiş filmler ele alınmıştır. Popüler içeriklerin seçilmesi, medyanın toplumsal algı ve değerleri şekillendirme gücünü daha net gözler önüne sermektedir.
