KIBRIS BARIŞ HAREKÂTI’NIN 50. YILI ANISINA TASARLANAN HATIRA MATERYALLERİ ÜZERİNE BİR İNCELEME
Abstract

An Examination of Commemorative Materials Designed on the Occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation
Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the philatelic, numismatic, and collectible materials prepared by the Republic of Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) within the scope of the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation, in the context of cultural memory, national identity, and visual representation. These materials are significant in that they reveal how the two countries interpret this historical event and the visual elements through which they construct collective memory. The study was conducted within the framework of a qualitative research approach, and the data were collected through document analysis. Accordingly, postage stamps and first-day covers were categorized as philatelic materials; circulating coins and commemorative coins as numismatic materials; and specially produced or limited-edition items as certified medallions. The analysis encompassed two commemorative stamps, two first-day covers, one commemorative coin, one circulating coin, one medallion, one gold medallion, and one serial-numbered medallion. The findings indicate that the materials produced by Türkiye prominently feature universal symbols such as the dove of peace, olive branches, and blue backgrounds-elements that reinforce peace-oriented narratives. In contrast, the materials issued by the TRNC tend to employ sepia tones and depict more dramatic scenes, emphasizing representational forms that foreground civil-military relations. In both countries’ materials, flag imagery and historical symbols are used as key visual elements to underscore a shared national identity. In conclusion, these commemorative materials function not merely as collectible objects but as documentary and aesthetic instruments that contribute to the construction of cultural memory and national identity.
