An Assessment Of The Theological Limits Of Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Religious Counseling Applications*

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI)-supported religious counseling systems have begun to be used in many areas ranging from fatwa services to individual religious guidance in Muslim societies in recent years. This development has both provided convenience in terms of digital access and created a controversial ground in terms of theology. The aim of this study is to analyze the theological, ethical and pedagogical limits of AI-based religious counseling applications in the context of Islamic thought in a multifaceted way. The study used a qualitative research method; it was examined with an interdisciplinary approach, and evaluations were made within the framework of Islamic legal methodology, Sufi tradition and digital ethical principles. The research findings show that such systems carry serious risks such as standardization of sects, spiritual superficiality, violation of data privacy, narrowing of ijtihadi diversity and lack of scientific authority, while facilitating access to religious information, offering multilingual and personalized content, and creating attractive alternatives for young generations. The problem is that these applications claim to represent the depth of meaning of religious knowledge through algorithmic operations and reduce the individual's spiritual journey to mechanical suggestions.
