Baby-Related Risk Factors of Postpartum Depression
Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to identify risk factors associated with the baby for postpartum depression of the mothers who live in Istanbul.
Material and Methods: The method of this study is descriptive. It was conducted on 310 mothers who had admitted to primary health care centers responsible for follow-up of both the pregnant mother and the baby. The data has been collected using the Scale of Edinburgh Postpartum Depression.
Results: It has been found that the level of postnatal depression is significantly related to the satisfaction of the expectation for the baby's gender (t=–3.506, df=308, p<.01) and willingness for pregnancy (t=–3.185, df=308, p<.01) According to one-way variance analysis, it was observed that postpartum depression levels were significantly associated with breastfeeding of the baby (F=5.407, df=309, p<.01) and experiencing problems in baby care (F=4.465, df=309, p<.001).
Conclusion: The findings of this study reveals that postpartum depression arises from unwanted pregnancy, inappropriate baby gender, difficulties of baby care, and the negative effects of baby on family relations.
