Evaluation of Risky Internet Usage and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors in Medical Students

Abstract

ObjectiveIn our study, it was aimed to determine the
relationship between risky internet usage and healthy lifestyle behaviors in
medical faculty students.

Material and Methods: Three hundred and nineteen students participated in this
cross-sectional study conducted at Dumlupinar University Medical Faculty
between 1 March and 30 March 2017. Sociodemographic information form, Internet
Addiction Scale (IAS) and Healthy Life Style Behavior Scale (HLSBS) were used
for data collection. Those whose scored over 50 from the IAS were defined as
"Risky Internet Users" (RIU). Descriptive data and percentages were
evaluated by Chi square and mean variables were evaluated by t-test.

Results: Of the students, 42.3% (n=135) were male and the mean age was
20.8±2.1 (range 18-27). While RIU prevalence was found to be 24.7%, this ratio
was determined to be higher for males (p=0.000) and for those who were not
satisfied with their department. The frequency of RIU was found to increase
when mother education level got higher (p=0.001) and as the duration of
internet usage increased (p=0.000). The prevalence of RIU was lower in those
who used internet for educational purposes (p=0.004). HLSBS score average was
found to be lower in students with RIU (p=0.001). The group with RIU was
determined to get lower scores in the subgroups of the scale such as
interpersonel relations (p=0.000), physical activity (p=0.009) and stress
management (p=0.008).







Conclusion: In our study, it was determined that in young people, RIU was
higher in males and was affected by different sociodemographic factors. While
inexistence of an internet addicted student was pleasing, guidance services on
RIU and healthy life style behaviors will be beneficial.

TIP ÖĞRENCİLERİNDE RİSKLİ İNTERNET KULLANICILIĞI VE SAĞLIKLI YAŞAM BİÇİMİ DAVRANIŞLARININ DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ

Abstract

Amaç: Çalışmamızda tıp fakültesi öğrencilerindeki
riskli internet kullanıcılığı ile sağlıklı yaşam biçimi davranışları arasındaki
ilişkiyi saptamak amaçlandı.

Gereç ve Yöntem: 1-30 Mart 2017 tarihinde Kütahya Dumlupınar Üniversitesi Tıp
fakültesinde yapılan kesitsel tipte olan çalışmaya 319 öğrenci katıldı. Veri
toplama aracı olarak sosyodemografik bilgiler formu, İnternet Bağımlılığı
Ölçeği (İBÖ) ve Sağlıklı Yaşam Biçimi Davranışları
Ölçeği (SYBDÖ)
kullanıldı. İBÖ’den 50 ve üzeri puan alanlar “Riskli
İnternet Kullanıcısı” (RİK) olarak tanımlandı. Tanımlayıcı veriler ve yüzdeler
Ki Kare, ortalama değişkenler t testi ile değerlendirildi.

Bulgular: Öğrencilerin
%42.3’ü (n=135) erkek ve yaş ortalaması 20.8±2.1 (yaş aralığı 18-27) idi. RİK
prevalansı %24.7 olarak bulunurken, bu oranın erkeklerde (p=0.000) ve öğrenim
gördükleri bölümden memnun olmayanlarda (p=0.045) daha yüksek olduğu saptandı.
RİK sıklığının anne öğrenim düzeyi arttıkça (p=0.001) ve interneti kullanım
süresi arttıkça yükseldiği (p=0.000) bulundu. RİK prevalansı interneti eğitim
amaçlı kullananlarda daha düşük saptandı (p=0.004). RİK olan öğrencilerin SYBDÖ
puan ortalaması düşük bulundu (p=0.001). RİK olan grubun kişilerarası ilişkiler
(p=0.000), fiziksel aktivite (p=0.009) ve stres yönetimi (p=0.008) gibi ölçeğin
alt gruplarından daha düşük puan aldığı saptandı.







Sonuç: Çalışmamızda,
gençlerde RİK olmanın erkeklerde yüksek olduğu ve farklı sosyodemografik
faktörlerden etkilendiği saptanmıştır. İnternet bağımlısı öğrenci olmaması
sevindirici bir sonuç olmakla birlikte, RİK ve sağlıklı yaşam biçimi
davranışları konusunda rehberlik hizmetlerinin yararlı olacağını ümit
etmekteyiz.
