Abstract

Accidental ingestion of foreign bodies is a common situation in infants and children. Although coins are frequently swallowed by children, the introduction of electronic devices into our lives as a result of technological advances and the increase in battery use in toys have led to an increase in battery swallowing cases. Ingestion of button batteries is a more urgent situation than other foreign body ingestion, as it may cause complications such as perforation, trachea-esophageal fistula, large vein fistulization, esophageal stricture, vocal cord paralysis or spondylodiscitis. With this case report, we wanted to present an interesting case in which a 10-month-old boy who swallowed a 15 mm diameter button battery and developed esophageal perforation at the tracheal carina level after being pushed into the stomach whose perforation healed spontaneously with a conservative approach with chest tube, total parenteral nutrition and gastrostomy.
