Museums in Tampa: Sustainability and Community Bonds

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between sustainability, digital transformation, and community engagement in selected museums in Tampa. It addresses how museums respond to contemporary challenges, including declining visitor numbers and the need to establish stronger connections with local communities. The findings indicate that digital technologies and immersive experiences play a significant role in attracting younger audiences. At the same time, museums are evolving beyond their traditional role as custodians of cultural heritage, increasingly functioning as spaces that foster social interaction and community-based value creation. Based on these findings, the study proposes an integrated model that combines environmental responsibility, community engagement, and academic collaboration. This model highlights the importance of aligning technological innovation with participatory practices to enhance the social sustainability of museums. While the proposed approach offers potential for adaptation in other mid-sized cities with similar characteristics, its applicability depends on local institutional and social conditions. In addition, the qualitative design and limited sample size require that the findings be interpreted with caution. Overall, the study contributes both conceptually and practically by providing a framework for rethinking museums at the intersection of sustainability, digitalization, and community engagement.
