Isaiah Berlin’s Understanding of The Plurality of Values and Negative Freedom, and Its Tension with Liberal Tradition

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between Isaiah Berlin’s understanding of freedom and the idea of plurality of values and classical liberalism. Berlin’s understanding of freedom has two aspects: negative and positive freedom. Berlin argues that although both versions of freedom may historically diverge from their own context, the divergence of positive freedom is more likely due to its close association with monist thought. Having observed the negative consequences of positive freedom in the twentieth century in which he lived, Berlin favored negative freedom. He developed the idea of plurality of values against positive freedom. The most crucial feature of the idea of plurality of values is that it is open to conflict between different values and has no final resolution. This article aims to show Berlin’s tension with classical liberalism because of his idea of plurality of values.

İsaiah Berlin’in Değer Çoğulculuğu ve Negatif Özgürlük Anlayışının Liberal Gelenek ile Gerilimi

Öz

Bu çalışmada Isaiah Berlin’in özgürlük anlayışı ve değer çoğulculuğu fikrinin klasik liberalizm ile olan ilişkisi ele alınmaktadır. Berlin’in özgürlük anlayışı, negatif ve pozitif özgürlük olmak üzere ikili bir yapı arz eder. Tarihsel olarak her iki özgürlük türünün de bağlamından saptırılabilmesinin olası olduğunu fakat pozitif özgürlüğün tekçi düşünce ile olan yakın ilişkisinden dolayı saptırılmasının daha olası olduğunu belirtir. Berlin, pozitif özgürlüğün bu problemli tarafını yaşadığı yüzyıl olan yirminci yüzyılda görmüş olup negatif özgürlüğü yeğlemiştir. Pozitif özgürlüğe karşı değer çoğulculuğu fikrini geliştirmiştir. Fakat ortaya attığı değer çoğulculuğu fikrinin en önemli özelliği, değer çatışmalarına açık olması ve nihai bir sonucunun olmamasıdır. Bu makale, Berlin’in böylesi bir değer çoğulculuğu fikrine sahip olması dolayısıyla klasik liberalizm ile yaşadığı gerilimi ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır.
