On Place: A Philosophical Hermeneutic Approach

Abstract

This study deals with place, which is one of the most fundamental concepts in geography. Although space has become the main concept in the geographical discipline in recent years, place continues to exist as an important concept. Place is a phenomenon to which we give meaning and at the same time from which we draw meaning. Geographical analyses that do not take place into account will be unsatisfactory and incomplete, considering that life exists together with place. The earth and human beings do not exist separately from each other; both continue their existence by being embedded in each other. In the study, the philosophical hermeneutic approach was utilized to better understand and interpret place in that the hermeneutic approach is mainly interpretation-centered and focuses on understanding. It also employs language, lived experiences, history, and the hermeneutic cycle in hermeneutic interpretation. Therefore, philosophical hermeneutics has been the most important approach that has guided us in dealing with the ontology and epistemology of place.

Yer Üzerine: Felsefi Hermönetik Bir Yaklaşım

Öz

Bu çalışma, coğrafyanın en temel kavramlarından biri olan yeri (place) ele almaktadır. Son yıllarda coğrafi disiplinde mekân (space) ana kavram haline gelmişse de yer önemli bir kavram olarak varlığını sürdürmektedir. Yer, bizim anlam verdiğimiz ve aynı zamanda anlam bulduğumuz bir olgudur. Yeri dikkate almayan coğrafi analizler doyurucu olmayacağı gibi eksik kalacaktır. Zira yaşamımız, yer ile birlikte var olmaktadır. Yer ve insan birbirinden ayrı bir şekilde varlığını sürdürmemektedir. Her ikisi de birbirinin içine gömülerek varlıklarını devam ettirmektedir. Çalışmada yeri anlamak ve yorumlamak için felsefi hermenötik yaklaşımdan yararlanılmıştır. Zira hermenötik yaklaşım yorumlama merkezlidir ve anlama odaklanmaktadır. Ayrıca hermenötik yorumlamada dil, yaşanan tecrübeler, tarih ve hermenötik döngüden faydalanılmaktadır. Bu nedenle, yerin ontolojisini ve epistemolojisini ele alırken bize kılavuzluk eden en önemli yaklaşım felsefi hermenötik olmuştur.
