The Idea of Modern Progress in Karl Löwith’s Thought: Crisis and a Proposal for a Solution

Abstract

This study examines Karl Löwith's critique of the idea of progress, the crisis he believes it engenders, and his proposed resolution to this crisis. Löwith's criticism of the modern notion of progress stems from his characterization of it as a philosophical crisis. According to Löwith, the roots of the modern idea of progress lie in Christian eschatology, and when progress is severed from its theological context, it leads to a crisis of meaning. Löwith argues that the concept of progress is burdened by a paradox of infinite advancement. The neglect of natural limits, he suggests, results in ethical and social crises.Löwith critiques modernity for fostering humanity's desire to dominate nature, which blinds it to its limitations and ethical responsibilities. In response to this crisis, Löwith proposes a return to the principles of measure and balance that characterized the ancient world. He contends that humanity’s future search for meaning is closely tied to the rediscovery of a way of life in harmony with nature and a renewed understanding of limitations.Löwith's perspective, which views progress through a more conservative lens, offers a unique viewpoint on contemporary concerns about the future of the planet. His ideas address issues such as the loss of meaning, the need for a lifestyle in harmony with nature, and the importance of recognizing human limitations. These themes resonate with pressing modern challenges, including climate change, the depletion of natural resources, and the societal implications of technological advancement, providing a thought-provoking framework for understanding and addressing these issues.

Karl Löwith Düşüncesinde Modern İlerleme Fikri: Kriz ve Bir Çözüm Önerisi

Abstract

Bu çalışma Karl Löwith’in modern ilerleme fikri eleştirisini, onun ilerleme fikrinin neden olduğunu düşündüğü krizi ve bu krize çözüm önerisini ele almaktadır. Löwith’in modern ilerleme fikrine yönelik eleştirisi; onu felsefi bir kriz olarak tanımlamasına dayanır. Ona göre modern ilerleme fikrinin kökleri Hristiyan eskatolojisindedir ve ilerleme fikri, teolojik bağlamdan koparıldığında, bir anlam krizine yol açar. Löwith’e göre ilerleme fikrinde sonsuz ilerleme paradoksu vardır. Doğal sınırların göz ardı edilmesi de Löwith’e göre etik ve toplumsal krizlere neden olmaktadır. Modernitenin, insanın doğayı kontrol altına alma arzusunu körüklemesinin onun sınırlarını ve etik sorumluluklarını görmezden gelmesine değinen Löwith, modernitenin krizine bir çözüm önerisi de sunmuştur: Antik dünyanın ölçü ve denge anlayışına dönülmesi gerekliliği. Ona göre insanlığın gelecekteki anlam arayışı, doğayla uyumlu bir yaşam ve sınırlılık anlayışını yeniden kazanmakla ilişkilidir. İlerlemeye daha muhafazakâr bir pencereden bakan Löwith’in bu fikirleri günümüzde dünyanın geleceğine ilişkin kaygıları da ifade eden; anlam kaybı, doğayla uyumlu yaşam tarzı, sınırlılık bilinci gibi konularda farklı bir perspektif sunmaktadır.
