Influence of Magnesium, Lead and Manganese Ions on the Gelling Characteristics of Bentonite Suspensions

Abstract

Effects of MgO, MgCl2⋅6H2O, PbCl2 and MnCl2⋅2H2O as inorganic additives on gelling property of a
bentonite were determined with gelling coefficient tests, sedimentation volume ratio tests and
electrophoretic mobility measurements. These compounds when added into the bentonite suspension
at concentrations of 1.5x10-3 M were found to give maximum gelling coefficient and sedimentation
volume ratio values corresponding to pH values (pH=8, 9 ve 10) of maximum MOH+ type (PbOH+
,MnOH+ and MgOH+, respectively) complex formation. The gelling property was improved in the order
Pb < Mn < Mg causing 11.5%, 20.1% and 30.1% increases in the gelling coefficient values of the sample.
This increase was assigned to the formation of positively charged edge surfaces due to adsorption of
MOH+ type cations that form at specific pH values in the suspesion with respect to the type of cation

MAGNEZYUM, KURŞUN VE MANGANEZ İYONLARININ BENTONİT SÜSPANSİYONLARININ JELLEŞME KARAKTERİSTİĞİ ÜZERİNDEKİ ETKİSİ

Abstract

MgO, MgCl2⋅6H2O, PbCl2 ve MnCl2⋅2H2O inorganik katkı maddelerinin bentonitin jelleşme özellikleri
üzerindeki etkileri jelleşme katsayısı testleri, çökelti hacmi oranı testleri ve elektroforetik hareketlilik
ölçümleri ile belirlenmiştir. Bu bileşikler, 1,5x10-3 M derişimde bentonit süspansiyona ilave
edildiklerinde, maksimum derişimde MOH+ tipinde iyonlarının (PbOH+, MnOH+ ve MgOH+) oluştuğu pH
değerlerinde (sırasıyla pH=8, 9 ve 10) bentonite en yüksek jelleşme katsayısı ve çökelti hacmi oranı
değerlerini kazandırmaktadırlar. Bentonitin jelleşme özelliği Pb < Mn < Mg sırasına göre iyileştirilmiş ve
bentonitin jelleşme katsayısı değerlerinde sırasıyla %11,5, %20,1 ve %30,1’lik artışlar elde edilmiştir.
Bu artışlar ise süspansiyon içerisinde katyon tipine göre belirli pH değerlerinde oluşan MOH+ tipindeki
katyonların pozitif yüklü kenar yüzeyleri oluşturması ile açıklanabilmektedir.
