Abstract

The development, in 1923, of the copper segregation process and its
use in the treatment of refractory copper ores are discussed, with the associated
problems of plant design. The development of the process and
its abandonment because of plant failure and the recession of 1931 are
detailed, as is the brief, but marginally economic, revival of the process at
the Akjoujt mine in Mauritania. The methods evolved by Anglo American
Corporation, Ltd., the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Mitsui Mining Company,
Ltd., are presented.
Attempts to segregate lead and copper - lead ores and the chemical
theory of nickel segregation are discussed, and various industrial plants
are compared.
In conclusion comments are offered on the role of research and of those
who undertake research.
In this, the last paper of this series concerned with aspects of milling
and metallurgical research, the evolution of a process for the benéficiation
of refractory copper ores - the 'segregation process' - is discussed.
From theoretical and chemical standpoints it is brillant and efficient, but
the design and operation of a plant, although simple in principle, are difficult
in practice. The process has deceived many metallurgists, and even
with 50 years of development it has not become an industrial success.

Abstract

Bu bölümde, 1923 yılında geliştirilen bakır segregasyon yöntemi ve
bu yöntemin refrakter bakır cevherlerinin işlenmesinde kullanılması ile
tesis dizaynında karşılaşılan problemler açıklanmıştır.Yöntemin geliştirilmesi
ile tesisteki başarısızlıklar ve 1931 yılı ekonomik bunalımı nedeniyle
yöntemden vazgeçilmesi detaylandınlmış, marjinal ekonomik olan
Moritanya'daki Akjoujt madeninin tekrar canlandırılması konu edilmiştir.
Anglo American Corporation, Ltd., U.S. Bureau of Mines ve Mitsui Mining
Company Ltd. tarafından geliştirilen yöntemler konu edilmiştir.
Kurşun ve bakır-kurşun cevherlerinin segregasyonu ile ilgili denemeler
ile nikel segregasyonunun kimyası tartışılmış, çeşitli endüstriyel tesislerin
karşılaştırılması yapılmıştır.
Sonuç olarak araştırma ve bunu yapanların rolü ile ilgili fikirler ileri
sürülmüştür.
Refrakter bakır cevherlerinin değerlendirilmesi için geliştirilen "segregasyon
prosesi", teorik ve kimyasal açıdan mükemmel ve son derece zekicedir.
Ancak tesisin tasarım işletilmesi ilke olarak basit olmakla beraber,
uygulamada zordur. Yöntem bir çok metalurjisti yanlış yöne sevketmiş
olup 50 yıl sonra şimdi bile başarıyla kullanılabilecekken endüstriyel
bir işlem haline gelememiştir.
