In this research, a series of characterization studies were carried out on Ayazini and Seydiler
tuffs which are used as building stones around Afyonkarahisar. Petrographic-mineralogical
(polarizing microscope, XRD), chemical analysis, porosity distribution and physico-mechanical
properties of the mentioned rocks have been determined. Water is an important factor in the
weathering of natural building stones. The salt solutions carried with the water move through the
building blocks through capillary cracks and due to evaporation salt crystals form in the cracks
and spaces. These formations cause the rocks to degrade. Experimental studies were conducted
with sodium sulphate decahydrate solution in order to determine the resistance of the rocks to the
salt crystallization. Disintegration properties of tuffs due to salt crystallization were determined
by weight loss calculation, uniaxial compressive strength and ultrasonic velocity measurements.
Seydiler tuffs have been determined to be more resistant to salt crystallization while Ayazini tuffs
which have higher porosity amount are observed to be decomposed.
