Abstract

Rogers Brubaker’s book Ethnicity Without Groups offers an unconventional perspective on the concepts of ethnicity and identity. Brubaker draws attention to a common mistake in the social sciences: treating often ethnic groups as existing, fixed structures. Whereas according to him, ethnicity is actually a constantly reconstructed phenomenon that varies depending on the context. Throughout the book, Brubaker questions the very concept of “ethnic group.” He does not see groups as natural units but rather as structures that emerge under certain conditions and are often shaped by political or social processes. This approach allows for a more flexible and critical view of ethnicity. The author also supports his theoretical framework with concrete examples. Especially with examples from Eastern Europe, he demonstrates how identities are constructed and how these constructions operate in practice. In this way, the book offers not only a theoretical but also an empirical contribution. Overall, Ethnicity Without Groups brings a fresh perspective to debates on ethnicity and identity, making it a thought-provoking work. It is a valuable resource that anyone interested in social sciences should read and reflect upon.

Gruplar Olmadan Etnisite

Abstract

Rogers Brubaker’ın Gruplar Olmadan Etnisite adlı kitabı, etnisite ve kimlik kavramlarını alışılmışın dışında bir bakış açısıyla ele alıyor. Brubaker, sosyal bilimlerde sıkça yapılan bir hataya dikkat çekiyor: Etnik grupların çoğu zaman var olan, sabit yapılar gibi ele alınması. Oysa ona göre etnisite aslında sürekli olarak yeniden inşa edilen, bağlama göre değişen bir olgudur. Brubaker, kitap boyunca “etnik grup” kavramının kendisini sorguluyor. Grupları doğal birimler olarak değil, belli koşullarda ortaya çıkan ve çoğu zaman siyasi ya da toplumsal süreçlerle şekillenen yapılar olarak görüyor. Bu yaklaşım, etnisiteye daha esnek ve eleştirel bir şekilde bakmayı mümkün kılıyor. Yazar, kuramsal çerçevesini somut örneklerle de destekliyor. Özellikle Doğu Avrupa’dan verdiği örneklerle, kimliklerin nasıl kurgulandığını ve bu kurguların pratikte nasıl işlediğini gösteriyor. Bu sayede kitap sadece kuramsal değil, aynı zamanda ampirik bir katkı da sunuyor. Genel olarak Gruplar Olmadan Etnisite, etnisite ve kimlik tartışmalarına yeni bir soluk getiren, düşündürücü bir eser. Sosyal bilimlerle ilgilenen herkesin okuyup üzerinde düşünmesi gereken bir kaynak.
