A systematic review of research on AI-supported writing in education in Türkiye

Abstract

This study aims to examine research addressing artificial intelligence (AI)-supported writing as a learning tool in education in Türkiye. In this context, studies published between 2021 and 2026 in the National Thesis Center of Council of Higher Education of Türkiye and the TR Index databases were reviewed. As a result of the search conducted using the keywords “writing” and “artificial intelligence,” a total of 31 studies were included in the scope of the research. These studies were conducted in the Turkish context, focused on AI-supported writing in education, presented data-based findings using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods, and had accessible full texts. The studies included in the research were analyzed using the systematic review method. The findings reveal that interest in AI-supported writing has increased significantly in recent years and that this area is becoming an emerging research focus. However, it was also found that most studies are concentrated in the field of language education. Most of the studies reviewed aimed to investigate students’ perceptions of the use of AI in writing processes. In this regard, students’ perceptions of AI use in writing were generally found to be positive. However, students also highlighted several disadvantages of AI use, including the risks of overreliance and dependency and ethical concerns. Future research should place greater emphasis on comparative and longitudinal studies examining how AI-supported writing can be integrated with different instructional and feedback approaches. Furthermore, the findings indicate a need for further research on AI-supported writing across different disciplines and educational levels.
