Trainee Teachers’ Opinions about Child Abuse and Neglect

Abstract

Abstract

                Aim of this research is to analyse opinions of fourth graders on child abuse and neglect attending various departments in faculty of educational sciences. The research was a qualitative research and carried out with candidate teachers. As a data collection tool, participants were applied with semi-structured interview form by researchers, and acquired data was analysed with content analysis. As a result, in the study, it was determined that candidate teachers’ level of knowledge and skills related to determination, prevention and intervention process for child abuse and neglect were not at an adequate level and they were not aware of their roles and responsibilities related to the issue in laws and regulations. At the same time, it was observed that candidate teachers were aware of their lack of knowledge and they were eager to participate in works to be done. This situation reveals that there is a need for studies and applications related to child abuse and neglect mainly in faculty of educational sciences and in other faculties. Especially, making teachers working with small children more competent on this issue and giving courses on prevention and intervention for child abuse during teacher training process will contribute very much.
