Details of Student Drawing and Visualization after Watching Black Box Experiment in Science Education

Abstract

The present research aims to determine students’ construction of concepts and animations in their drawings, by asking them to state their predictions, observations, and explanations through drawing during the blackbox experiment. The participants of the study are 50 lower secondary students from 6th, 7th and 8th grades who had previously taken part in Reflections of Science on Nature Project, which took place in Izmir, in February 2012 and was supported by Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council. This project included laboratory experiments and outdoor science activities. One of these activities is the black-box experiment. Students completed the experiment process of prediction, observation and explanation, and expressed their thoughts through drawing. In this research, art based research design from qualitative research methods was used; data were gathered from drawings, symbols, icons and writings in drawing. Morevover, the data gathered were interpreted using descriptive analysis. The data gathered from students were coded and analyzed. After the analysis of drawings, in predictions about the experiment, it was determined that students made their drawings in three dimensions by adding spatial depth at the start of the experiment. However, at the end of the experiment, it was determined that students made their drawings in two dimensions without adding spatial depth and used writings.

FEN ÖĞRETİMİNDE KARA KUTU DENEYİNİ İZLEYEN ÖĞRENCİLERİN ÇİZİM VE CANLANDIRMALARINDAKİ DETAYLAR

Abstract

Araştırmada, kara kutu deneyinde öğrencilere tahminlerini, gözlemlerini ve açıklamalarını çizimlerle anlatmaları istenerek onların çizimler üzerindeki canlandırmaları ve kavramları yapılandırma biçimlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma, 2012 Şubat ayında İzmir ilinde düzenlenen ve TÜBİTAK tarafından desteklenen; Bilimin Doğaya Yansımaları projesine katılan 6.,7. ve 8. sınıf 50 ortaokul öğrencisiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu projede laboratuvar ortamında deneyler ve okuldışı fen etkinlikleri yapılmıştır. Bu etkinliklerden biride kara kutu deneyidir. Öğrenciler bu deney sürecini tahmin, gözlem ve açıklama ile tamamlamışlar ve düşüncelerini bir kağıda çizerek aktarmışlardır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olgubilim araştırma deseni kullanılmış; veriler çizimler ve çizimlerde anlatılan simge, ikon ve yazılarla toplanmış; elde edilen bulgular içerik analiz aracılığıyla çözümlenerek yorumlanmıştır. Öğrencilerden toplanan veriler kodlanarak analizi yapılmıştır. Çizimlerin analizleri sonucunda deneyin başlangıcında deneyle ilgili tahminlerde uzamsal derinlik katılarak üç boyutlu çizimlerin yapıldığı ve yazının kullanılmadığı; deney sürecinin sonuna doğru ise tahminlerin uzamsal derinlik katılmayarak iki boyutlu çizimlerin yapıldığı ve yazının kullanıldığı anlaşılmıştır.
