Ahiskian Hasta Hasan and His Ashug School

Abstract

Ahiska which has been the part of Ottoman Empire for hundreds of years was occupied by Russia in XIX century. The Turks have been forced out of Ahiska-the bridge between Anadolu and the Caucasus from time to time. They were totally deported to Kazakhistan on 14th of November, 1944. This event had very negative impact on our culture. Hasta Hasan was a famous ashug of his period. People respected him as a saint person and he was stated to be the voice of the truth. There eHist different legends regarding his life and creative activity. The reason for his not being in the attention in XX century was of political reasons. The collapse of Ottoman Empire, the conflicts between Turkey and Soviet Union and the deportation of Turks from their own lands declared as “betrayers of the motherland” created obstacles for Hasta Hasan’s creativity to be investigated. The collection of his poems, their publish and use by ahugs were strongly prevented. The poems of Ashug Shenlik who was disciple to Nuru (Nuru himself was disciple to Hasta Hasan) were collected and published in Turkey. Hasta Hasan could create new path in his creativity which very few people can do. He established the school of Childir-Ahiska. Outstanding persons such as Irfani, Kul Karani, Usta Pulat, Ashug Shenlik played a great role in the establishment of this school. Despite all the obstacles during Soviet period, Hasta Hasan’s poetry spread not only in the village Lebis in Ahiska lands where he lived (present Georgian Republic) but also in Anadolu, Kars and in Turkustan during XVIII-XIX centuries. I started collecting the poems of Hasta Hasan and his contemporaries since 1970s. The poems that I collected from the Caucasus and Kazakhistan have been prepared for publish and a foreword casting a look at Hasta Hasan’s life has been written. The thesis considers the researchers dedicated
