Ottoman Seal in Serbian Culture

Abstract

There is no doubt about the fact that Serbian culture can not be imagined
without Ottoman traces. The Ottoman influence on Serbian culture still can be seen in various
fields of life. Serbia was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire 1459-1878. developing under
the Ottoman political influence and in the framework of the Ottoman civilization. This
influence is still lasting both in material and spiritual culture. Islamic religion had a great
part in the political and social development of the Balkans through centuries.
The Ottoman legacy is an inevitable fact in almost all fields of Serbian material
culture. Since a part of the Serbian people converted to Islam and accepted Islamic way of
life, they began to imitate their Muslim neighbors in building and furnishing their homes, in
cooking and dressing. From the other side non-Muslim population was living according to
the culture and taste of the ruling Muslim population as well. Thus the Ottoman culture had
influence on the whole society not only Muslims. We can follow the Ottoman influence in
these sectors:
Urbanization and city and village structure
Architecture
Home interior design
Food culture
Language and literature
Psychology and philosophy
In this work we want to analyze relations and interactions between the Ottoman
and the Serbian culture. After the Ottoman conquest of Serbia, the Ottomans incorporated
some Serbian institutions, administrative forms and laws into their administrative system.
Nevertheless, the Ottoman rule brought new administration and new social structure. It
seems that there was no difference between Serbian and Ottoman governors in XIX century.
Serbian Prince Milosh was living, dressing and ruling as a muhafiz of Belgrade. Those who
were longing to get free from the Ottoman rule wanted to leave behind the Ottoman vision
of state and its life style and to establish a brand new society according to the European
model. It is not right to look for the Ottoman traces in Serbian culture just in the
appearance. We should look for these traces in life philosophy and mentality. It can be said
that these traces are still alive.

SIRP KÜLTÜRÜNDE OSMANLI DAMGASI

Abstract

Şüphesiz ki Balkan kültürü ve Sırp kültürü Osmanlı damgası olmadan
düşünülemez. Sırp kültüründe Osmanlı etkisini hayatın çeşitli alanlarında görmek hâlâ
mümkündür. 1459-1878 yılları arasında Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun egemenliği altında
bulunan Sırbistan Osmanlı siyasi nüfuzu altında ve Osmanlı medeniyeti çerçevesinde
gelişmekteydi. Bu etki hem maddi hem de manevi kültürde kalıcı bir şekilde mevcuttur. İslam
dininin Balkanların siyasal ve toplumsal gelişiminde yüzyılar boyu büyük bir payı vardır.
Sırp maddî kültürünün hemen hemen bütün alanlarında Osmanlı mirası kaçınılmaz
bir olgudur. Sırp nüfusunun bir kısmı İslam’ı kabul ederek İslam hayat tarzını benimsemiş,
müslümanları ev yapımında, evlerin içlerinin düzenlenmesinde, mutfakta, giyimde taklit
etmeye başlamıştır. Diğer yandan Müslüman olmayan nüfus da hakim olan İslam
nüfusunun kültürüne ve zevkine göre yaşımışlardır. Böylece Osmanlı kültürü sırf
Müslümanları değil bütün toplumu etkilemiş oluyordu. Osmanlı etkisini şu alanlarda
gözlemleyebiliriz:
Şehir ve köy yapısı
Mimari
Ev tipi ve dekorasyonu
Yiyecek ve içecek kültürü
Giyim
Dil ve edebiyat
Psikoloji ve hayat felsefesi
Bu çalışmamızda Osmanlı kültürü ile Sırp kültürü arasındaki ilişkileri ve etkileşimi
incelemek istiyoruz. Osmanlılar Sırbistan’ı fethettikten sonra Ortaçağ Sırbistan kurumlarını,
yönetim şekillerini ve kanunlarını kendi yönetimine dahil etmişlerdir. Osmanlı egemenliği
Sırbistan’a yeni yönetim anlayışı ve yeni toplum yapısı getirmiştir. XIX. Yüzyıla gelindiğinde
Sırp yöneticileri ile Osmanlı yöneticileri arasında fark yok gibidir. Sırp Prens Miloş Belgrad
muhafızı gibi yaşamış, giyinmiş ve şehri yönetmiştir. Osmanlı egemenliğinden kurtulmayı
hayal edenler Osmanlı devlet anlayışı ve hayat modelini terketmek Avrupa modeline göre
yeni bir toplum kurmak istiyorlardı. Sırp kültüründe Osmanlı damgasını sadece görünüşte
aramak yanlıştır. Bu etkiyi Sırp toplumunun hayat felsefesi ve düşünce yapısında aramamız
gerekir. Bu damganın bugün de canlı olduğunu söylemek mümkündür
