Examining the Effects of Sports Centers on Sporting Capital

Abstract

Increasing participation in sports and physical activity is an important health goal in developed countries. By supporting private entrepreneurs, individuals will be offered alternatives regarding participation in sports by increasing the number of sports centers in public and private institutions. Sporting capital is a new concept that has entered the sports literature in recent years. Rowe (2015) defines sports capital as the stock of physiological, social and psychological characteristics and competencies that support and motivate the individual to participate in sports and sustain this participation over time, and divides it into three sub-dimensions: physiological, social and psychological domains. Sports centers, which have become widespread today, are one of the factors affecting participation in sports. In this context, the study aims to examine the impact of sports centers on sporting capital. An 11-question Personal Information Form containing demographic information and the Sporting Capital Scale (SCS) developed by Sivri and Özbek (2022) were used as data collection tools. SPSS 21 package program was used to analyze the research data. Due to the normal distrubition o the data; age, gender, education, etc, t-test was used for groups of two, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for groups of more than two, and Tukey/Games-Howell (post-hoc) was used to find differences between groups. According to the study findings, it has been observed that sports centers have an important place in sports participation, thus creating and protecting the sporting capital. Therefore, it is important for private sports centers to be sufficient in terms of quality and quantity, both individually and socially.
