Folk beliefs are one of the interesting and colorful facts of a culture. At the same time, folk beliefs give us some important clues in order to understand a society correctly and intimately. Kunio Yanagita (1875-1962), is considered the founder of modern folkloristics in Japan. Tales of Tohno (1910), one of his major works, which he had gathered many folk tales and folk beliefs of Iwate region is still very popular in Japan. In this article, the folk beliefs which can be observed in Tales of Tohno have been dealt with in details under some categories.
