Dini Özgürleşme mi, Dinden Özgürleşme mi? Locke ve Marx Momenti

Abstract

Bu makale, John Locke ve Karl Marx’ın din ve özgürlük kavramlarına ilişkin yaklaşımlarını karşılaştırmalı olarak incelemektedir. Locke, dini bireysel vicdanın bir alanı olarak değerlendirirken hoşgörüyü özgür toplumların temel ilkesi olarak görür; devletin dini alanlardan tamamen çekilmesini savunur. Marx ise dini, toplumsal yabancılaşmanın ve ekonomik sömürünün ideolojik bir tezahürü olarak değerlendirir; ona göre gerçek özgürlük, yalnızca dinin değil, dinin ortaya çıkmasına neden olan maddi-toplumsal koşulların dönüşümüyle mümkündür. Makale, bu iki yaklaşımı "dini özgürleşme" (Locke) ve "dinden özgürleşme" (Marx) ikiliği üzerinden tartışmakta, modern seküler toplumlarda din-devlet-birey ilişkilerinin nasıl yapılandırılması gerektiği üzerine eleştirel bir tartışma yürütmektedir. Locke’un birey merkezli özgürlük anlayışı, dinin ideolojik boyutunu göz ardı etme riskini taşırken; Marx’ın yapısal dönüşüm perspektifi ise bireyin inanç alanındaki öznelliğini aşırı genelleştirme tehlikesi barındırır. Locke’un birey merkezli ve akılcı özgürlük anlayışının sınırlılıkları ile Marx’ın yapısal dönüşüm perspektifinin güncel geçerliliği bu çerçevede sorgulanmaktadır. Çalışmada birincil kaynaklara dayalı analiz yöntemi benimsenmiş ve düşünürlerin özgürlük, din, devlet ve ideoloji eksenindeki kuramsal çerçeveleri karşılaştırmalı olarak ele alınmıştır.

Religious Emancipation or Emancipation from Religion? Locke and Marx Moment

Abstract

This article offers a comparative analysis of John Locke and Karl Marx’s approaches to the concepts of religion and freedom. Locke conceives religion as a matter of individual conscience and regards tolerance as a foundational principle of free societies; he advocates for the complete withdrawal of the state from religious affairs. Marx, on the other hand, interprets religion as an ideological expression of social alienation and economic exploitation; for him, genuine freedom is possible only through the transformation of the material and social conditions that give rise to religion itself. The article frames these contrasting perspectives through the duality of “religious emancipation” (Locke) and “emancipation from religion” (Marx), and critically discusses how the relationship between religion, state, and individual should be structured in modern secular societies. Locke’s individual-centered conception of freedom risks overlooking the ideological dimension of religion, while Marx’s structural perspective risks overgeneralizing the subjective nature of individual belief. The study adopts a primary-source-based analytical method and compares the theoretical frameworks of both thinkers in relation to freedom, religion, the state, and ideology.
