The Branding of the City of Çanakkale and Measurement of its Brand Image

Abstract

The increasing conditions of competition together with the globalization phenomenon has brought forward the competence among the cities. These competing cities have been performing branding actions in order to increase their preferability by putting forward the differences from other cities. The image factor of these cities has become prominent during this particular branding process. The “urban image” is a concept that states how the cities are perceived by people. The image factors present in a city will definitely contribute the branding progress of the cities. Thus, identifying the image factors first while performing city branding studies will be beneficial during the branding process. It has been aimed to measure Çanakkale’s brand image and city branding in this study. Thanks to the survey studies conducted accordingly, what factors contribute the branding of the city of Çanakkale and the level of its brand image were tried to be measured. According to the results of the research, Çanakkale's “historical richness” is the most contributing factor to the branding of the city of Çanakkale among all other factors. The "Historical Site (Martyrdom)" result has been reached as the tourism destination that is thought to contribute the most to the branding of the city of Çanakkale. It has been concluded that the city image perception of Çanakkale is moving in the “good” direction.
