The Mediating Role of Dissociative Experiences in the Effect of Emotional Abuse on Loneliness

Abstract

In the scientific literature, the first form that generally comes to mind when discussing “violence” is phy-sical violence; however, it is widely accepted that violence also has other forms and components, such as emotional, sexual, and economic abuse. The focus of this study is on emotional (psychological) abuse. Within the scope of the study, the concepts of dissociation and loneliness are also examined comprehensi-vely in conjunction with emotional abuse. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effect of emotional abuse on loneliness, mediated by dissociative experiences. This research contributes to the lite-rature by highlighting the role of dissociative processes in loneliness and by revealing the psychosocial consequences of emotional abuse. In this study, the impact of emotional abuse experienced by adults on their loneliness levels was examined within the context of the mediating role of dissociative experiences. The research was conducted using the relational survey model, and 207 adults participated (172 women, 35 men; Mage  = 23.73, SD = 5.82). Participants completed the Demographic Information Form, the Emo-tional Abuse Exposure Scale (DSMKO), the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES-II), and the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA-S). Showed that the concept of emotional abuse is positi-vely correlated with the concept of loneliness, and this relationship is partially mediated by dissociative experiences. This research contributes to the literature by clarifying the effects of emotional abuse on individuals' internal psychological processes and social functioning.

Duygusal Şiddetin Yalnızlık Üzerindeki Etkisinde Dissosiyatif Yaşantıların Aracılık Rolü

Abstract

Genellikle bilimsel literatürde “şiddet” denildiğinde ilk akla gelen biçim fiziksel olanıdır; ancak şiddetin duygusal, cinsel ya da ekonomik gibi farklı form ve bileşenlerinin de bulunduğu yaygın olarak kabul gör-mektedir. Bu çalışmanın odağında duygusal (psikolojik) şiddet yer almaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında duy-gusal şiddetle birlikte dissosiyasyon ve yalnızlık kavramları da kapsamlı bir şekilde ele alınmıştır. Bu ça-lışmanın amacı duygusal şiddetin yalnızlık üzerindeki etkisini, dissosiyatif yaşantıların aracılığı ile ince-lemektir. Bu çalışma, literatüre hem dissosiyatif süreçlerin yalnızlıktaki rolünü vurgulayarak hem de duy-gusal şiddetin psikososyal sonuçlarını ortaya koyarak katkı sağlamaktadır. Bu araştırmada, yetişkin bi-reylerin maruz kaldıkları duygusal şiddetin; yalnızlık düzeyleri üzerindeki etkisi, dissosiyatif yaşantıların aracılık rolü bağlamında incelenmiştir. Araştırma, ilişkisel tarama modeliyle gerçekleştirilmiş ve araştır-maya 207 yetişkin birey katılmıştır (172 kadın, 35 erkek; Ort. yaş = 23.73, SS = 5.82). Araştırmada katı-lımcılarına; Demografik bilgi formu, Duygusal Şiddete Maruz Kalma Ölçeği (DSMKO), Dissosiyatif Ya-şantılar Ölçeği (DES-II) ve Yetişkinler için Sosyal ve Duygusal Yalnızlık Ölçeği (SELSA-S) uygulanmıştır. Uygulamalar neticesinde elde edilen bulgular, duygusal şiddet kavramının, yalnızlık kavramı ile pozitif yönde ilişkili olduğunu ve bu ilişkinin kısmen dissosiyatif yaşantılar aracılığıyla gerçekleştiğini göster-miştir. Araştırma, duygusal şiddetin bireylerin içsel psikolojik süreçleri ve sosyal işlevsellikleri üzerinde-ki etkilerini açıklığa kavuşturarak literatüre katkı sunmaktadır.
