Chemistry Student Teachers’ıdeas about Secondary Level Chemistry Education
Abstract
As academicians, we have to improve the educational system by developing effective means of teaching strategies (curriculum) since no society can exist without education.
Chemistry is always perceived conceptually consisting of a bunch of formulas describing relations due to the fact that knowledge of chemistry has not been significantly related to daily life. For a better and attractive chemistry education, it is therefore necessary to provide students with practical examples from our daily life and demonstrate how chemistry is involved in those events. This can only be achieved by designing/developing a program (curriculum) in chemistry education which aims to promote the understanding of chemistry among students with the aid of practical applications.
This study is designed for senior students who have completed their school experience (practical teaching), and aims to acquire/investigate their opinions about the secondary education chemistry teaching at Marmara University, Atatürk Faculty of Education, Department of Chemistry Education.
It is pointed out that the primary factors that need to be taken into consideration in the preparation of a secondary education chemistry curriculum are students’ intellectual level, national goals as well as the expectations of the society. It is therefore important that secondary education chemistry curriculum is esigned/developed by collaboration of a group of experts of subject area (chemistry), program developers, educational psychologists and educational instructors.
